Trump rejects calls to slow down AI development

United States President, Donald Trump, has dismissed calls for a slowdown in the development of artificial intelligence, insisting that his administration has sufficient powers to prevent the technology from being misused.

Trump made the remarks on Monday in response to concerns raised by Anthropic Chief Executive Officer, Dario Amodei, who had called for the pace of AI development to be reduced because of potential safety risks.

“The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades! The Trump Administration has stopped AI ‘people’ from doing bad, or potentially bad, ‘things,’ like Dario (Anthropic!), who is now pretending to be a ‘perfect little angel’ – and we will continue to do so!” Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social account.

He added that the government already had significant legal and regulatory powers over AI companies, while warning that restrictions on the technology could benefit China.

“We already have tremendous CRIMINAL and REGULATORY power over these companies! There is a SICK conspiracy going on against AI and Data Centers, and the only one that is happy about it is China. WHOEVER WINS AI, WINS! We are leading China, and all others, and will continue to do so. Conspiracy Theorists, Treasonists, Traitors, and Leakers, BEWARE! Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP”
Amodei had on Saturday published a lengthy essay in which he warned about the potential dangers of rapidly advancing AI technology and argued that the industry needed to slow the pace at which increasingly capable models were developed.

“We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models,” Amodei wrote, adding, “I won’t lie to you — there are real dangers. And I think for too long the industry lied to people about the fact that this technology had risks.”

OpenAI Chief Executive Officer, Sam Altman, subsequently backed Amodei’s call, saying, “I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier. This has been a primary topic of discussions we’ve had at OpenAI in recent weeks,” while technology entrepreneur Elon Musk also endorsed the warning, writing, “Dario is right.”

Concerns about AI’s wider impact have also grown among Americans, with a recent Pew Research Center survey indicating that about two-thirds of US adults believe AI is developing too quickly.

Separately, former Anthropic researcher, Jacob Coxon said he resigned because he believed the rapid development of AI posed an unprecedented danger.
