Truck crush Kogi varsity lecturer death

A tragic road accident in Felele, Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, claimed the life of a lecturer at the Federal University, Lokoja, on Wednesday afternoon.

The victim, identified as Mrs Kemi Emmanuel, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts, was reportedly killed after falling off a commercial motorcycle and being run over by a speeding trailer along the busy Crusher area of the highway.

Confirming the incident on Thursday, the Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Tenimu Etuku, described the accident as “a very sad and unfortunate occurrence.”

According to him, the crash happened around 3:30 p.m. and involved a truck and a motorcycle rider.

“When the accident happened, our rescue team responded swiftly and took the victim to the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, but unfortunately, she was confirmed dead on arrival,” Etuku told reporters in a phone interview.

He added that the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.

The FRSC commander expressed dismay over the recklessness of the motorcycle rider, warning commercial motorcyclists to prioritize the safety of their passengers and adhere to traffic regulations.

The incident has reignited public concern about the growing number of accidents involving heavy-duty vehicles along the Felele axis and other major routes in Lokoja.

Residents and students of the university community have called on the state government to take urgent action to address the recurring tragedies.

“It’s becoming unbearable. Every few weeks, someone loses their life on this same road,” said a student who identified herself simply as Ruth. “We are pleading with the authorities to regulate the movement of trailers during the day.”

This latest accident adds to a series of fatal crashes that have plagued Kogi State in recent months. In May 2025, at least 19 people, including five children, were killed in a multiple crash along the Obajana–Lokoja road. Similar accidents in April and October also claimed several lives.

Many residents are now urging the state government to restrict the movement of heavy-duty trucks through urban areas during peak hours and enforce stricter road safety measures to prevent further loss of lives.
