Troops rescue 53 civilians, recover eight vehicles in Borno

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have rescued 53 civilians and recovered eight vehicles after dismantling a suspected terrorist roadblock along the Buratai–Kamuya road in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State.

The Nigerian Army disclosed the development in a statement issued by the Acting Military Information Officer of Headquarters Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni.
According to the statement, the operation was carried out on Wednesday following intelligence gathered through surveillance.

Captain Goni said troops stationed at Dutse Kura detected suspected ISWAP/JAS fighters blocking the highway through surveillance cameras, prompting the immediate deployment of a Quick Reaction Force.

“The Quick Reaction Force swiftly moved to the location and pursued the insurgents toward the Mangari–Dora general area. Troops engaged the terrorists in a firefight, forcing them to retreat in disarray,” he said.

He added that the operation led to the rescue of 53 civilians who had been held by the terrorists, while eight vehicles seized during the attack were also recovered.

“Following the engagement, troops cleared the terrorists’ withdrawal route, dominated the area and carried out further searches. All rescued persons, recovered vehicles and other properties were safely evacuated to Buratai town,” the statement added.

The Army said the rescued civilians are currently undergoing documentation and medical assessment.

The military commended the troops for their professionalism and prompt response, describing the operation as another success in ongoing efforts to restore security across the North-East.

The command also appealed to residents to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and credible information on suspicious activities.

Borno State has remained at the centre of Nigeria’s insurgency for more than a decade, with security forces sustaining operations against terrorist groups.

Earlier this month, Operation HADIN KAI announced the killing of 27 terrorists during separate operations in the Southern and Northern Tumbus areas of the state.
