Tinubu orders service chiefs to crush emerging armed groups

President Bola Tinubu has charged the newly installed service chiefs to act swiftly and decisively against rising security threats across the country, warning that emerging armed groups must be neutralised early to prevent further instability.

The President gave the directive on Thursday during the decoration of the security chiefs with their new ranks at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja.

Tinubu described the ceremony as more than a formal event, saying it signified “a renewed commitment toward restoring lasting peace in Nigeria.”

“Today’s ceremony is beyond symbolism. It marks the beginning of our renewed effort to ensure the peace and security of all Nigerians,” he said.

“New snakes must be smashed right in the head before they grow. Nigerians expect results, not excuses.”

The officers elevated were General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff; Lieutenant-General Wahidi Shuaib as Chief of Army Staff; Air Marshal Kennedy Aneke as Chief of Air Staff; and Vice Admiral Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff. Their confirmation followed Senate approval on Wednesday after a closed-door screening session.

Tinubu praised the armed forces for retaking territories previously captured by terrorists and for rescuing abducted citizens, but noted that new threats are emerging in different regions.

“Security threats are constantly evolving. We have recently seen new armed groups in the North-Central, North-West and parts of the South. We must not allow these threats to fester,” the President said.

He urged the new military leadership to strengthen intelligence collaboration and deploy technology-driven operations.

“Be innovative, be pre-emptive, and be courageous. Work together and share information effectively. We need to clean them up and clear them out.”

Tinubu acknowledged the sacrifices of military personnel, paying special recognition to Lt.-Gen. Shuaib, who sustained injuries during counter-insurgency operations.

“I understand you were injured and recuperated. You and your colleagues have made the country proud,” he stated.

The President assured the military of his full support in their operations, noting that the government is determined to end the prolonged insecurity that has affected communities across the country.

The ceremony was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, senior government officials, and family members of the service chiefs.
