Tinubu has no plan to rename Nigeria, abolish shariah law – Presidency

The Presidency has dismissed as completely false a viral report alleging that President Bola Tinubu is planning sweeping constitutional changes that would rename the country the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia law in the northern region.

In a statement issued on Thursday, May 21, 2026, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the claims circulating online were fabricated and intended to mislead the public.

“There is no truth whatsoever in the story being shared,” he said, describing it as a deliberate attempt to stir political tension.

According to the statement, the so-called proposal—reportedly linked to an unnamed initiative referred to as “Project True Federation”, does not exist and has not been submitted or planned for presentation to the National Assembly.

Onanuga stressed that the story was part of a wider effort by “desperate politicians” to create disaffection and destabilise the country ahead of the election season.

He further warned Nigerians to disregard what he called “fake and divisive narratives,” noting that constitutional amendments cannot be unilaterally initiated or rushed.

“The process of constitutional change is rigorous and requires broad legislative approval, including a two-thirds majority in both chambers of the National Assembly and the concurrence of at least 24 State Houses of Assembly,” the statement explained.

The Presidency added that President Tinubu is focused on ongoing economic reforms and governance priorities aimed at improving living conditions for Nigerians.

It urged citizens to remain vigilant against misinformation, especially as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that such false reports are likely to increase in the coming months.
