President Bola Tinubu has lauded the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for its recent recovery of 753 housing units in Abuja, describing it as a testament to the administration’s commitment to combating corruption and implementing necessary economic reforms.
“You could see EFCC recovering over seven hundred and fifty something houses from one person, locally here o!” President Tinubu remarked, highlighting the magnitude of the seizure.
He further acknowledged the challenges faced upon assuming office in May 2023 but emphasized the progress made through “difficult, long overdue but necessary economic reforms.”
The EFCC announced the final forfeiture of the estate, located on Plot 109, Cadastral Zone C09, Lokogoma District, Abuja, on December 2, 2024. Spanning 150,500 square meters, the estate comprises 753 duplexes and other apartments, marking the largest single asset recovery in the commission’s history.
Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of the Federal Capital Territory High Court granted the order following proceedings under Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud Act, which allows for action against properties rather than individuals, particularly in cases of unclaimed assets.
According to the EFCC, the identity of the property’s owner has been linked to former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, who is currently embattled with other numerous charges in the court of law.
