Kingmakers nominate Olakulehin as Olubadan of Ibadanland

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, describing the revered monarch as a symbol of wisdom, service, and cultural dignity.

In a statement released on Monday through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu said he received the news of the monarch’s death with profound shock, especially after recently receiving an invitation to mark the royal father’s 90th birthday and first coronation anniversary.

“Oba Olakulehin was a noble custodian of Ibadan’s heritage, a beacon of intellect and leadership. His life was a fusion of traditional values and modern ideals,” Tinubu said.

The President praised the late monarch’s dedication to national development and his moral influence, which he said brought stability not only to Ibadanland but to the entire Yoruba nation.

“His Majesty was a highly accomplished man of peace, a public servant, and a royal father who embodied the finest ideals of leadership and scholarship. His reign, though short, was impactful and inspiring,” the President stated.

Reflecting on his personal connection, Tinubu added, “Just last week, I received an invitation from Kabiyesi to his 90th birthday and coronation anniversary. It is deeply saddening that he passed away just days before the celebration. His memory will remain a source of pride to Ibadan and beyond.”

He offered prayers for the peaceful repose of the late monarch and urged the people of Ibadanland to find strength in the values and legacy Oba Olakulehin left behind.

Born on July 5, 1935, in Okugbaja village near Akanran, Oba Olakulehin ascended the throne in March 2024 following the death of Oba Moshood Lekan Balogun.

Renowned for his intellect, the monarch held a master’s degree in administration and economics, pursued doctoral studies, and taught at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. His ascent through Ibadan’s unique rotational succession system between the Otun (civil) and Balogun (military) lines earned him widespread respect.
