Tinubu, ex-presidents, govs gathers for Buhari’s burial in Daura today

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, past Nigerian leaders, governors, and dignitaries from across the country are gathering in Daura, Katsina State today, Monday, July 14, for the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday at the age of 82.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, acting on the President’s directive, accompanied the late President’s remains from London. Buhari, who died around 4:30 pm at a hospital in the United Kingdom following a prolonged undisclosed illness, is being buried according to Islamic rites.

According to The PUNCH, a senior official at the Presidency, who preferred anonymity, said, “The burial will take place today. The corpse is being flown into the country overnight and taken straight to Daura. As you know, Islamic burials are done swiftly.”

President Tinubu has ordered national flags to fly at half-mast for seven days and summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council meeting for Tuesday, July 15, in honour of the deceased.

In a personally signed tribute released by the Presidency, Tinubu wrote:

“President Buhari was, to the very core, a patriot, a soldier, and a statesman. His legacy of service and sacrifice endures.

He stood firm through the most turbulent times, leading with quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential.”

The President described Buhari as a man who confronted corruption, promoted discipline in public service, and prioritized the country above personal interests.

“He championed discipline in public service, confronted corruption head-on, and placed the country above personal interest at every turn,” Tinubu stated.

He extended his condolences to Buhari’s widow, Aisha, their children, the people of Daura, and the government of Katsina State.

“We honour his service. We reflect on his legacy. And we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul,” he added. “May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.”

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo expressed sorrow over Buhari’s passing, describing him as “a colleague, a comrade, and a patriot.”

“His death is a great loss to the nation. At a time like this, we need the statesmanship of those who have governed to help us solve Nigeria’s challenges,” Obasanjo told journalists.

Retired General and former Military President Ibrahim Babangida recalled their early days in the Nigerian Military Training College in 1962.

“From those early days, Muhammadu stood out — quiet yet resolute, principled yet humble. Our bond was forged not just by training but by a shared love for Nigeria,” Babangida said in a tribute.

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo also paid homage, saying he and his wife, Dolapo, were deeply saddened by Buhari’s death.

“Nigeria has lost a true patriot — a man whose life was marked by unyielding devotion to the nation he loved,” Osinbajo said.

“His legacy will endure as a testament to the nobility of public service, defined by honesty, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to the public good.”

In Kaduna, where Buhari had a home, the atmosphere was quiet. Armed security personnel barred journalists and visitors, while neighbours wore solemn expressions.

In contrast, Daura witnessed a steady stream of mourners visiting the late President’s home to pay respects.

“We are not allowing journalists in for now. Call back later for confirmation,” a close family member told The PUNCH.

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum described Buhari’s death as “a significant depletion in the rank of Africa’s great men,” in a statement signed by its chairman, Kwara State Governor AbdulRaman AbdulRazaq.

“He will be remembered for his humility, strategic patience, and modest lifestyle,” the statement read.

Imo State Governor and APC Governors Forum Chair, Hope Uzodimma, praised Buhari’s “dedicated leadership,” while Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, called him a “mentor and moral compass.”

“His legacy is one of sacrifice, selflessness, and steadfast commitment to the unity and progress of our dear country,” Yahaya said.

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, described Buhari as a “towering figure in national life.”

“He was a soldier, statesman, reformer, and, above all, a beloved leader of the people,” Sani said.

Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, lauded Buhari’s courage and dedication to national interest, while Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, reflected on Buhari’s transition from military ruler to democratic leader.

“Although his military rule had its flaws, Buhari reinvented himself and governed for two terms with notable achievements, particularly in infrastructure,” Abiodun said.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, expressed condolences to the family, noting that “Buhari made his mark in serving the country.”

Other governors, including those of Ekiti, Bauchi, Edo, Kebbi, and the Northern States Governors’ Forum, issued tributes acknowledging the late President’s integrity, discipline, and patriotism.

“Nigeria has lost a statesman. History has gained a legend,” Uba Sani concluded.

Buhari had travelled to the UK in late June for follow-up treatment. His health was a recurring concern during his presidency, with at least 13 medical visits abroad. His longest absence came in 2017 when he spent over 100 days in London.

Despite health challenges, Buhari served two terms from 2015 to 2023, having previously ruled as military Head of State from 1984 to 1985. His presidency was defined by an anti-corruption agenda and infrastructure development.
