Tinubu appoints Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as foreign affairs minister

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Nigeria’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs, following the resignation of Yusuf Tuggar, who is reportedly preparing for political activities ahead of the 2027 elections.

The President also nominated Sola Enikanolaiye as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, with the appointment subject to confirmation by the Senate.

The changes were announced in a statement on Wednesday by the presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, who said the reshuffle is part of efforts to reposition Nigeria’s foreign policy.

“These adjustments are aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement and aligning our foreign policy with the administration’s economic priorities,” Onanuga said.

He noted that Odumegwu-Ojukwu brings extensive diplomatic experience to the role, having previously served in key positions within Nigeria’s foreign service.

“Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu comes with decades of experience and a solid understanding of Nigeria’s global engagements. Her leadership is expected to enhance the country’s international relations,” he added.

On Enikanolaiye’s nomination, the presidency described him as a seasoned career diplomat with postings across several global capitals, including Addis Ababa, London, Ottawa, Belgrade, and New Delhi.

“His wide-ranging experience will ensure continuity and provide critical support in advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives,” the statement said.

Tinubu congratulated the new appointees and urged them to focus on protecting national interests, deepening economic diplomacy, and improving the welfare of Nigerians living abroad.

The appointments come at a time when the administration is seeking to strengthen international partnerships and promote economic growth through strategic global engagement.
