Swiss club Basel sign Nigerian defender Akpe Victory in €3m deal

Former Swiss champions, FC Basel have completed the signing of Nigerian defender Akpe Victory from Hungarian side Zalaegerszegi TE.

Victory’s future has been a major talking point in recent weeks after attracting interest from several European clubs.

The 19-year-old centre-back only arrived at Zalaegerszeg from FK Banga in January, but his impressive displays quickly placed him on the radar of clubs such as SL Benfica, Rangers F.C. and RC Strasbourg Alsace.

Last week, reports revealed that Basel had agreed a deal with Zalaegerszeg for the promising defender, and the move has now been officially confirmed.

The Swiss Super League side announced on Tuesday that Victory has signed a permanent contract after completing a €3 million transfer.

The agreement runs until the summer of 2030, with the teenager set to join the first-team squad immediately. He will wear the No. 55 shirt during the new campaign.

Victory’s arrival also sees him become the fourth Nigerian to feature for Basel, following in the footsteps of Philip Otele, Ike Shorunmu and Gabriel Okolosi.

His €3 million transfer fee makes him the club’s joint-most expensive Nigerian signing alongside Otele.

The highly rated defender will now aim to establish himself in Basel’s starting lineup. Known for his imposing physique and composure in possession, Victory is expected to strengthen the team’s defence as the club targets a return to the top of Swiss football.

The move also offers the young defender an ideal platform to continue his development and showcase his abilities on a bigger stage.

Although he is yet to represent Nigeria at any level, Victory will be eager to impress in Switzerland and push for his first invitation to the national team.
