A young Senegalese footballer’s dream has ended in tragedy after he was murdered by kidnappers when his family was unable to gather enough money for his ransom, according to The Sun.
The heartbreaking news of 18-year-old Cheikh Toure’s death has plunged the Senegalese football community into mourning.
His death was officially confirmed on Saturday by the Ministry of African Integration and Foreign Affairs of Senegal.
In a statement, the ministry announced that the promising goalkeeper had been found dead in Ghana.
Toure, who had previously trained at Esprit Foot Yeumbeul, was reportedly lured into a deadly trap by a gang of armed extortionists.
The group deceived him into believing he was traveling to attend a trial with a professional football club, only to abduct him and demand ransom from his family.
Despite the family’s desperate attempts to raise the required sum, they were unable to meet the kidnappers’ demands. The criminals then made good on their threat and killed the teenager.
Authorities in both Senegal and Ghana have launched a joint investigation into the kidnapping and murder, with a task force set up to determine the full details surrounding the incident.
According to French Football Weekly, arrangements are being made to repatriate Cheikh’s body to Senegal.
In a public statement, a spokesperson for the Ministry conveyed the government’s “deep compassion to the grieving family” and assured that the ongoing investigation is being pursued “with the greatest attention and priority.”
