Tensions and solidarity converged on Monday at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Abuja, as former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai arrived to honour an invitation from the anti-graft agency.
A large crowd had gathered outside the EFCC’s Jabi office, split between demonstrators showing support for El-Rufai and those demanding a thorough investigation into his alleged activities.
The scene, described by eyewitnesses as tense yet orderly, reflected the polarizing perception of the former governor across the political and public spectrum.
Drama unfolded briefly when security personnel reportedly prevented some members of El-Rufai’s entourage from entering the premises, sparking moments of commotion before order was restored.
Despite the high emotions, the demonstration remained largely peaceful, with no reports of violence or arrests.
El-Rufai’s visit comes days after a failed attempt to apprehend him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Thursday.
Following the incident, his legal team confirmed that he would comply with the EFCC’s summons, choosing to present himself voluntarily for questioning.
After a brief exchange with security officials at the gate, El-Rufai eventually entered the EFCC complex, while supporters and critics continued to hold placards and chant slogans outside.
Observers noted that the show of public interest underscores the scrutiny the former governor faces amid ongoing investigations into alleged financial misconduct during his tenure in Kaduna State.
