Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has spent a second consecutive night in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Abuja.
Mr El-Rufai has been detained since Monday after responding to the commission’s invitation for questioning over alleged corruption.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the investigation centers on suspected fraud during his tenure from 2015 to 2023.
An EFCC source told NAN on Tuesday night that the former governor would remain in custody as the questioning continues.
“As I am talking to you now, the former governor is still with our interrogators and he will be spending the night with them,” the source said.
The source added that the commission was committed to a thorough and professional investigation of the allegations.
“I can assure you that the EFCC will do its job diligently by addressing all the issues raised against him,” the source said.
When asked about Mr El-Rufai’s possible release or whether he would be charged, the source declined to give a timeline, noting that it would depend on the progress of the inquiry.
Meanwhile, Mr El-Rufai’s media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, confirmed the detention in a statement on Monday.
He said the former governor honoured the EFCC’s invitation and engaged in discussions with officials, describing the meeting as “frank and fruitful.”
He also noted that Mr El-Rufai’s legal team commended the professionalism of the investigators.
Mr Adekeye added that the former governor remained with the commission after Monday’s engagement.
Mr El-Rufai’s detention comes shortly after his return to Nigeria from Cairo, Egypt, with the sequence of events beginning last Thursday.
