Super Eagles beat Iran 2-1 in friendly clash

The Super Eagles of Nigeria delivered an efficient and composed performance to claim a hard-earned 2–1 win over Iran in Friday’s international friendly on March 27, 2026.

First-half efforts from Moses Simon and a second-half strike by Akor Adams proved decisive, as Nigeria balanced attacking sharpness with resilience in the closing stages.

Nigeria set the tone early in the contest. Samuel Chukwueze carved open Iran’s defence with a well-weighted through pass, sending Simon through on goal to finish calmly just six minutes into the game.

Despite controlling large spells of the first half, the Super Eagles were unable to add to their early lead before the interval.

Head coach Eric Chelle rang the changes at the break, handing a debut to Emmanuel Fernandez, whose introduction injected fresh energy into the side.

The impact was swift. Six minutes after the restart, Ademola Lookman teed up Akor Adams, who showed composure in front of goal to double Nigeria’s advantage.

More substitutions followed, including the introduction of debutant Chibuike Nwaiwu, as Nigeria sustained their tempo with fresh legs.

Iran pulled one back midway through the second half through Mehdi Taremi, setting up a nervy finish. However, Nigeria remained organised and disciplined to see out the game.

Late introductions such as Paul Onuachu, Chidera Ejuke, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru helped maintain control, while Frank Onyeka also featured as the Super Eagles held firm to secure victory.

The win represents Nigeria’s second triumph over Iran, their first since the 1998 Carlsberg Cup, with both sides having previously played out a draw at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Chelle’s men will now shift focus to their upcoming friendly against Jordan on March 31, as they continue preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
