Special forces deployed to Benue over insecurity

In a bid to stem the tide of violent attacks in Benue State, Governor Hyacinth Alia has announced the arrival of a combined team of tactical and response forces to bolster security across vulnerable communities.

The deployment, according to a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Tersoo Kula, follows renewed killings by suspected armed herders, particularly the recent massacre in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area.

“I acknowledge and share in your pains and grief caused by these attacks on the community by criminal elements suspected to be armed herdsmen,” Governor Alia stated.

“The government is fully committed to ensuring the safety of all Benue residents and will not relent until peace is fully restored.”

Alia revealed that the new security measures include the arrival of federal tactical teams, additional deployments to at-risk areas, and the activation of response squad units effective from Sunday.

“Response squad teams are now in Benue. Strategic community dialogues are also ongoing to strengthen intelligence sharing and ensure quick intervention in emergencies,” he said.

The governor assured citizens that the state government is actively collaborating with federal security agencies, traditional institutions, and community leaders to devise long-term strategies against insecurity.

“We are consistently engaging relevant stakeholders to enhance security interventions. Our joint operations units are being reinforced to ensure comprehensive coverage,” he noted.

Calling for calm and vigilance, Alia urged community and religious leaders to guide youths away from actions that could escalate tensions, while encouraging residents to report suspicious activity through verified channels.

“We must remain law-abiding and committed to peaceful coexistence. I appeal to the public to make use of official communication platforms and avoid unverified information,” he advised.

In a show of solidarity with the affected communities, Deputy Governor Sam Ode has reportedly visited the scene of the latest attack to express the administration’s sympathy and support.

Governor Alia reaffirmed that his administration would not rest until peace, justice, and security are fully guaranteed across the state.
