Snapchat introduces paid plans for memories

Snapchat has announced new subscription options for its Memories feature, introducing paid storage tiers for users who exceed the free 5GB limit.

The feature, first launched in 2016, allows users to save photos and videos beyond the usual 24-hour disappearing window.

According to the company, users have collectively stored more than one trillion Memories since its debut.

With the new system, accounts under 5GB will continue to access the service at no cost.

However, users who have accumulated thousands of saved snaps beyond that threshold will need to purchase additional storage to maintain access.

The paid options include 100GB of storage for $1.99 per month and 250GB through the $3.99 Snapchat+ plan. At the highest level, Snapchat Platinum provides 5TB of space for heavy users.

To ease the transition, Snap is offering a one-year grace period for those already above the 5GB limit, giving them time to either subscribe or download their content to personal devices.

Explaining the move, Snap said the shift is necessary to keep the Memories feature sustainable, “It’s never easy to transition from receiving a service for free to paying for it, but we hope the value we provide with Memories is worth the cost,” the company noted.

“These changes will allow us to continue investing in the feature and ensure your moments remain safe and accessible for the long term.”

The rollout reflects a growing trend of social media platforms introducing paid features to manage growing data demands while maintaining long-term services.
