Ghanaian dancehall star Shatta Wale’s highly anticipated Shattafest UK 2026 was abruptly cancelled after a stampede outside the venue prompted police to shut down the event over safety concerns.
The concert, held at Copthall Playing Fields in London, had attracted thousands of fans before the situation turned chaotic, leading to a major emergency response.
In a statement released after the incident, the Shatta Movement Empire said the decision to cancel the show was taken with the safety of fans as the foremost consideration.
“With heavy hearts, we have made the difficult decision to cancel Shattafest UK. Our priority has always been, and remains, the safety and well-being of everyone in attendance,” the statement read.
Management said it had received reports that several people were injured and that there were allegations of fatalities, but stressed that it was awaiting official confirmation from the relevant authorities.
“Our hearts are with everyone who has been affected by this tragic situation. We extend our deepest thoughts and prayers to the victims, their families, friends and all those impacted,” the organisers said.
The organisers noted that Shatta Wale’s concerts are intended to bring people together through music, describing the incident as a heartbreaking turn of events.
They also appealed to the public and the media to refrain from spreading unverified information while investigations continue.
“We kindly ask everyone to avoid speculation and rely only on verified information as the authorities work to establish the facts,” the statement added.
Authorities reportedly intervened after concerns emerged over health, safety and security following the stampede, with eyewitnesses claiming panic broke out after rumours of a gas explosion spread through the crowd.
Several attendees were said to have collapsed during the rush, prompting police, paramedics and other emergency responders to move in and manage the situation.
Videos shared on social media showed police informing fans that the event had been cancelled.
“Too many people. The event is cancelled,” an officer was heard announcing to the crowd.
The Shatta Movement Empire thanked emergency services, security personnel, medical teams and venue staff for their swift response, while also expressing appreciation to fans who had travelled from different locations to attend the concert.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, and UK authorities have yet to issue a comprehensive statement on the reported casualties.
