Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan returns to Senate after six-month suspension

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has officially resumed her legislative duties after serving a six-month suspension imposed by the Senate earlier in the year.

Akpoti-Uduaghan made her return on Tuesday as the Senate reconvened for plenary following a 10-week recess. The session was presided over by Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin.

Her return marks the end of a turbulent episode that stirred intense public debate and criticism over her suspension in March 2025. The lawmaker was punished for alleged misconduct during a protest against the reassignment of her seat by Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on February 20.

During the period of her suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s office, located in Suite 2.05 of the Senate Wing, was sealed off by the National Assembly’s Sergeant-at-Arms. It was reopened only two weeks ago by Deputy Director Alabi Adedeji, signaling her reinstatement.

Speaking after regaining access to her office, Akpoti-Uduaghan accused the Senate leadership of intolerance, describing Akpabio as a “dictator.”

“I stood for what I believed was right, and I faced the consequences. But I’m back to continue representing my people with the same courage and conviction,” she told journalists.

Interestingly, Senate President Godswill Akpabio was absent during Tuesday’s plenary. Despite his absence, the chamber recorded a large turnout of lawmakers, reflecting a full return to legislative business.

Political observers believe Akpoti-Uduaghan’s return could reignite discussions about freedom of expression and internal democracy within the National Assembly.

The Kogi lawmaker, known for her outspoken nature, maintained that her suspension only strengthened her resolve. “This experience has taught me resilience. I remain committed to advocating for transparency and fairness in our legislative processes,” she added.
