The Senate is set to screen and confirm the appointments of the new Chief of Defence Staff, Lt.-General Olufemi Oluyede, along with other Service Chiefs, on Wednesday.
This decision comes following separate requests from President Bola Tinubu, presented in two letters addressed to the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and read during plenary on Tuesday.
In his letters, President Tinubu referenced Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act, Cap A20, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, urging the Senate for “expeditious consideration and confirmation of the nominees.”
After the letters were read, Senator Akpabio referred the matter to the Committee of the Whole and confirmed that the screening and confirmation exercise would take place on Wednesday, October 29, 2025.
President Tinubu had on Sunday appointed Lt.-General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding General Christopher Musa.
The newly appointed Service Chiefs also include Major-General Waidi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S. K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff.
