Senate confirms Tinubu’s ministerial nominee

The Nigerian Senate on Thursday approved the nomination of Muttaqha Darma as a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, following his screening during plenary.

Darma, who was nominated by President Bola Tinubu, was cleared after addressing lawmakers on his qualifications, policy priorities and strategies for tackling the country’s housing challenges.

During the screening, the minister-designate assured senators of his commitment to working closely with the National Assembly to confront Nigeria’s housing deficit, which he described as a major national concern.

“We will work together with the National Assembly to ensure that the challenge of housing is addressed,” Darma said.

He outlined plans to improve leadership within the housing sector, expand access to affordable homes and strengthen institutions responsible for housing delivery.

According to him, millions of Nigerians are affected by inadequate housing, stressing the need for targeted reforms to make homes more accessible, particularly for low- and middle-income earners.

“I believe everything is possible. I will do everything within my capacity to close the gaps and improve the situation,” he added.

Darma also highlighted the importance of governance and accountability, noting that both public and private sector participation would be critical in addressing the deficit.

Responding to questions from lawmakers, including Adams Oshiomhole, he acknowledged the scale of the problem but expressed optimism that it could be addressed through effective policies and collaboration.

He further pledged to contribute to efforts aimed at improving security, noting that stable and safe communities are essential for sustainable housing development. On urban planning, he assured lawmakers that restoring the Abuja master plan would be prioritised.

The confirmation followed the presentation of the president’s request by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who referred the nomination to the Committee of the Whole for consideration.

Darma, an engineer and former Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund, is expected to bring technical expertise to the ministry, particularly as the government seeks to address growing urbanisation and infrastructure gaps.

His confirmation comes amid efforts by the administration to strengthen key sectors through the appointment of technocrats, especially in housing where demand continues to outpace supply across major cities.
