The Nigerian Senate has officially commenced its annual recess, with plenary sessions scheduled to resume on September 23, 2025.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who explained that the break aligns with the legislative calendar and reflects coordination with the House of Representatives, which had also embarked on its recess.
“We have started a new legislative calendar that extends to June next year. This period provides us with the opportunity to go on a break while engaging in major oversight functions,” Akpabio stated during the Senate’s final plenary before adjournment.
He emphasized that while plenary activities are paused, Senate committees are expected to remain active, especially in undertaking field visits and preparing reports for presentation upon resumption.
“This is the best time for all relevant committees—the diaspora committee, interior, reparation and others—to embark on oversight visits, including prison inspections. Ensure your reports are ready by the time we reconvene,” he instructed.
The Senate President reminded members of their core responsibilities, urging them not to treat the recess as a holiday.
“Though you are stepping away from plenary, your legislative duties continue. Your constituents expect you to represent their interests across various sectors,” he added.
Akpabio also informed the Senate of the passing of Professor Janet Plang, wife of Senator Diket Plang, and urged colleagues to travel to Plateau State for her funeral. He noted that a chartered flight would depart Abuja by 8 a.m. on Friday for the occasion.
Meanwhile, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele commended lawmakers for their commitment throughout the legislative year and moved a motion to defer all outstanding items on the order paper to the next legislative day. The motion was unanimously adopted.
“We appreciate our colleagues for their tireless efforts in ensuring smooth legislative business on behalf of the people and government of Nigeria,” Bamidele said.
