Genk striker Rafiu Durosinmi has set his sights on finishing as the Belgian Pro League’s leading scorer after making an encouraging start to his first season with the club.
The Nigeria international opened his league account in Genk’s 2-1 away defeat to Zulte Waregem on Sunday, scoring the visitors’ first goal.
His performance earned him the Man of the Match award despite Genk ultimately leaving the stadium empty-handed.
Durosinmi is already targeting a bigger personal achievement, with the Golden Boot firmly on his agenda this season.
“I want to score, I want to finish high in the standings, and I also want to go for the top scorer title. I have always dreamed of that,” Durosinmi told DAZN.
The 25-year-old is hoping to emulate fellow Nigerians Paul Onuachu and Tolu Arokodare, both of whom have previously finished as the Belgian top flight’s highest scorers.
Arokodare’s achievement provides a particularly useful benchmark for Durosinmi, having netted 14 league goals for Genk during the 2024/25 campaign to claim the Pro League Golden Boot.
With one goal already to his name, Durosinmi needs another 13 to equal Arokodare’s tally.
He will now be looking to establish himself as Genk’s main attacking outlet and maintain his scoring form throughout the campaign.
Despite his individual display against Zulte Waregem, the striker admitted he would have preferred to mark his debut with a victory.
“Of course I would have preferred to win, because then this would have been a great moment to celebrate,” he added.
Durosinmi’s header put Genk ahead early in the encounter, but Zulte Waregem responded strongly to overturn the deficit and secure all three points on the opening weekend.
The Nigerian will have an opportunity to add to his tally when Genk welcome Westerlo to the Cegeka Arena on Saturday.
With the season still in its early stages, Durosinmi will hope his impressive debut marks the beginning of a consistent goalscoring run as he pursues the top-scorer honour he has long dreamed of winning.
