Robo-surgery patient hails RCCG Health Village, says treatment saved overseas costs

The first patient to undergo robotic-assisted surgery at Redeemer’s Health Village, Pastor Alexander Idachama, has described his experience at the Ogun State facility as exceptional, praising its medical equipment and standard of care.

Idachama underwent a radical prostatectomy at the hospital in Redemption City, Ogun State, in a procedure that has drawn attention to the facility’s growing use of robotic technology in complex medical operations.

The surgery was performed by a team led by Prof. Obi Ekwenna-Davis, co-founder of RoboMed Global, alongside Nigerian doctors including Dr. Ifeanyi, in collaboration with United States-based RoboMed Global Inc.

The hospital also recorded another milestone during the period, with its medical team carrying out what was described as West Africa’s first 500km telerobotic surgery.

In the procedure, surgeons at the Redeemer’s Health Village operated remotely on a patient with a kidney tumour in Abuja.

Idachama said he became aware of the facility through its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Adedamola Dada, and chose to receive treatment there instead of travelling overseas.

“I arrived at the hospital in the last week of August and was taken through a series of orientation sessions to acquaint me with the surgical process.”

He said the medical team, led by Dr. Ifeanyi, explained the stages of the operation and the expected recovery process before the surgery was conducted.

According to him, the robotic technology used for the procedure met international standards, while his recovery was sufficiently quick for him to leave the hospital less than 24 hours after the operation.

Although he experienced some pain following the surgery, Idachama said it was mild and reduced within a short period.

He further said robotic-assisted surgery offered advantages including greater precision, reduced pain and less physical impact on patients.

Idachama said his experience had given him confidence in the hospital and added that he would recommend the facility to his friends and family, noting that its facilities could compare with leading medical centres globally.
