Rennes reportedly eye Nigerian defender Emmanuel Fernandez

French Ligue 1 side, Rennes, have reportedly entered the battle to sign Nigerian and Rangers centre-back Emmanuel Fernandez.

The Nigerian defender has attracted growing interest across Europe following an impressive first season with the Scottish club after arriving from League One outfit Peterborough United in a deal worth about £3.5 million last summer.

Fernandez quickly became a key figure at Ibrox, delivering a series of commanding performances that earned him Rangers’ Player of the Season award.

The 24-year-old was also named in the Scottish Premiership Team of the Season after an outstanding campaign.

Rangers are understood to be reluctant to part with the defender and would seek a substantial transfer fee should they consider offers during the current window.

In addition to his defensive contributions, Fernandez chipped in with five goals in 27 league appearances for the Light Blues.

His impressive form at club level has also boosted his international profile, with the centre-back earning three appearances for Nigeria.

French publication Ouest-France reported that Rennes have identified Fernandez as one of three central defensive targets as they look to reinforce their squad ahead of the new season.

However, the Ligue 1 club are not alone in their pursuit, with Dutch giants Feyenoord and Bundesliga clubs Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund also said to be keeping tabs on the Nigerian international.
