Real Madrid have imposed fines of €500,000 each on Aurélien Tchouaméni and Federico Valverde following a training ground altercation that reportedly left Valverde requiring hospital treatment.
The club confirmed that no sporting punishment was handed down to either player, stating in an official release that the financial sanction “thereby concludes the internal procedures” initiated into the incident.
Valverde is expected to miss Sunday’s El Clásico against FC Barcelona after sustaining a head injury during the clash, with the midfielder ruled out for up to two weeks.
Tchouaméni returned to training on Friday and remains in contention to feature at the Camp Nou this weekend.
In its statement, Real Madrid said both players had accepted responsibility and taken part in an internal inquiry.
“They expressed their complete remorse for what happened and apologised to each other,” the club said, adding that both players also “extended their apologies to the club, their teammates, the coaching staff, and the fans, and both have made themselves available to Real Madrid to accept whatever sanction the club deems appropriate.”
Valverde was reportedly taken to a medical facility near the club’s Valdebebas training complex by assistant coach Álvaro Arbeloa, where he required stitches for a facial cut.
The Uruguay international later sought to downplay the severity of the incident and clarify what happened.
“The strain of the competition and frustration caused the situation to escalate,” Valverde wrote on social media, expressing regret at the media coverage of the incident.
“I accidentally hit a table during the argument, causing a small cut on my forehead that required a routine visit to the hospital,” he said.
“At no point did my teammate hit me, and I didn’t hit him either.”
