La Liga: Real Madrid sign Diomande from Leipzig for €140m

Real Madrid have secured the signing of Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig in a transfer valued at up to €140 million (£120 million), with the 19-year-old committing to a seven-year contract at the Santiago Bernabéu.

According to BBC Sport on Thursday, the move ranks among the biggest in the club’s history and could eclipse the fee Madrid agreed to pay Borussia Dortmund for England midfielder Jude Bellingham in 2023.

Diomande attracted interest from several European heavyweights after an outstanding campaign with RB Leipzig.

Paris Saint-Germain had been considered favourites to land the teenager but ended their pursuit after the German club rejected a €120 million (£102.5 million) bid.

Liverpool also monitored the Ivorian international during the transfer window as they searched for a long-term successor to Mohamed Salah. However, their opening offer of £69 million was turned down.

The exciting youngster becomes Real Madrid’s sixth signing of the summer under manager Jose Mourinho, joining Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Carlos Espi.

Diomande arrives in Spain after a remarkable 2025–26 campaign in Germany, where he won the Bundesliga Young Player of the Season award.

He scored 12 league goals and supplied eight assists, finishing the season with 13 goals and 10 assists across all competitions.

On the international stage, he represented Ivory Coast at the FIFA World Cup, playing in all four matches as the Elephants advanced to the quarter-finals before their elimination by Norway.

His rise to the top has been swift. After leaving Ivory Coast to continue his development at an academy in the United States, he joined Spanish club Leganés in 2025 before earning a move to RB Leipzig later that year.

Recognised for his speed, dribbling skills and ability to operate on either flank, Diomande is expected to strengthen Real Madrid’s attack ahead of the new season.

The Spanish champions regard the teenager as one of Europe’s brightest emerging talents and believe he has the qualities to become a key figure at the club for years to come.
