Ramadan, Lent: Army chief urges discipline, unity among troops

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has called on officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army to remain disciplined, united, and dedicated to their duties as they continue to tackle the country’s security challenges.

Shaibu made the appeal on Saturday in Abuja during a joint breaking of fast organised for Muslim and Christian personnel observing the Ramadan and Lenten seasons.

According to him, the Nigerian Army’s strength and existence are built on the commitment and sacrifices of its soldiers.
“It is because of our soldiers that officers have a job, and because of you the Army exists,” he said.

The army chief noted that the spiritual periods of Ramadan and Lent emphasise virtues such as sacrifice, patience, compassion, and discipline, which he said are values that align with the professional standards expected of soldiers.

He added that the gathering provided an opportunity for personnel to reflect on their responsibilities in protecting the country.

Shaibu stated that thousands of troops remain deployed across various operational theatres across Nigeria, confronting terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and other forms of criminal activities.

“In the North-East, our forces are sustaining the fight against terrorism and insurgency, while in the North-West and parts of the North-Central, our troops are battling banditry and other violent crimes,” he said.

The COAS also acknowledged that many soldiers serving in these difficult environments are observing the Ramadan and Lenten fasts, describing their resilience and professionalism as commendable.

He reiterated that his leadership focus is to build a professional, highly motivated, and combat-ready army capable of addressing emerging security threats through collaboration with other security agencies.

“My command philosophy is centred on leadership by example and sound administration, with particular attention to the welfare of our troops,” Shaibu said.

“I am determined to prioritise the welfare of our personnel because the strength of the Nigerian Army lies in the well-being, morale, and readiness of its soldiers,” he added.

The army chief also paid tribute to officers and soldiers who lost their lives while defending the nation, assuring that their sacrifices would always be remembered.

He further appreciated President Bola Tinubu for his support to the Nigerian Army and reaffirmed the military’s loyalty to the President and its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy and territorial integrity.

Earlier, the Chief of Administration (Army), Maj.-Gen. Isa Abdullahi, said the joint breaking of fast symbolised unity and mutual respect among soldiers of different religious backgrounds.

He noted that the overlapping periods of Ramadan and Lent reflect shared values such as sacrifice, discipline, and compassion.

According to Abdullahi, the occasion reinforced the spirit of unity among personnel who are serving the same national mission despite their religious differences.

The event was attended by senior military officers, soldiers, religious leaders, members of the media, and other invited guests.
