Preview: Super Eagles face Algeria in AFCON quarter-final clash

Two of African football’s heavyweights clash in Marrakech on Saturday as Algeria and Nigeria battle for a place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals.

Both teams enter the quarter-finals with perfect records, the only sides to do so, which only adds to the stakes.

The tournament now separates the boys from the men as these continental giants meet at Marrakech Stadium.

The eight teams that booked their places in the quarter-finals are also Africa’s top-ranked sides according to FIFA, with Algeria ranked 34th globally and third on the continent, while Nigeria sits 38th worldwide and fifth in Africa.

Algeria: Cautious Momentum
Despite disappointing group-stage exits in the previous two AFCON editions, Algeria came into this tournament as one of the favourites.

The 2019 champions have lived up to that billing, winning all three group matches, scoring seven goals and conceding just once against Sudan, Burkina Faso, and Equatorial Guinea.

Their round-of-16 clash with DR Congo proved tougher, but the Desert Warriors prevailed 1-0 after extra time, thanks to Adil Boulbina’s 119th-minute strike.

This strong showing has contributed to an impressive run of 11 wins from the last 14 matches across all competitions with their only defeat in that span coming via penalty shootout against the UAE in the FIFA Arab Cup.

Yet caution is warranted: Algeria has been eliminated at this stage in four of their last six AFCON knockout appearances.

Nigeria: Eyes on Redemption
Nigeria, on the other hand, have rarely faltered at the quarter-final stage, reaching at least the semi-finals in 15 of their 20 previous AFCON tournaments, including the last edition where they finished runners-up.

Seeking to atone for missing the 2026 World Cup and to finally lift the continental trophy, the Super Eagles have been in formidable form.

They have won all four matches so far, scoring 12 goals and conceding four.

Their 4-0 victory over Mozambique in the round of 16 marked their first clean sheet of the tournament, with Victor Osimhen scoring twice and Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams adding one each.

The Mozambique win was briefly overshadowed by an on-field fracas involving Osimhen, Lookman, and Bruno Onyemaechi, but the squad reportedly moved past the incident ahead of this high-stakes clash.

Nigeria, however, have struggled historically against Algeria, failing to win in their last four meetings, including a 2-1 defeat in the 2019 AFCON semi-finals.

Team News
Algeria are monitoring the fitness of midfielder Ismael Bennacer, who was forced off against DR Congo.

Jaouen Hadjam could return after missing the last two games, though Anis Hadj Moussa is likely out for the remainder of the tournament.

Adil Boulbina pushes for a start after his decisive strike, while Riyad Mahrez remains in contention for the Golden Boot with three goals, one behind Morocco’s Brahim Diaz.

Nigeria appear fully fit, with coach Eric Chelle expected to retain his 4-4-2 diamond formation. Stanley Nwabali is likely in goal, protected by a back four of Bright Osayi-Samuel, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, and Bruno Onyemaechi, while Wilfred Ndidi anchors midfield. Frank Onyeka operates on the right, with Lookman supporting Osimhen and Adams up front.

Possible Lineups
Algeria: Zidane; Belghali, Mandi, Bensebaini, Ait Nouri; Boudaoui, Zerrouki, Chaibi; Mahrez, Amoura, Maza

Nigeria: Nwabali; Osayi-Samuel, Ajayi, Bassey, Onyemaechi; Onyeka, Ndidi, Iwobi; Lookman; Osimhen, Adams

Prediction
We anticipate a close contest between the continent’s only unbeaten sides, featuring Algeria’s tight defence against Nigeria’s potent attack. Goals at both ends are likely, but Nigeria’s firepower could edge them through.
