Police fire tear gas, disrupt EndSARS memorial at Lekki tollgate

Police operatives on Tuesday morning dispersed residents, journalists and political figures who gathered at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos State to commemorate victims of the October 2020 #EndSARS protests.

The officers reportedly fired tear gas canisters at the gathering, forcing participants to flee the area.

Among those present at the memorial were the African Democratic Congress governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and the Nigeria Democratic Congress governorship candidate, Funso Doherty.

The event was organised by the Enough is Enough movement to honour those who lost their lives during the #EndSARS demonstrations, which protested against police brutality in Nigeria.

The gathering was disrupted before participants could proceed with the planned wreath-laying ceremony at the tollgate.

A video shared by TheCable captured the moment participants scrambled for safety as tear gas spread across the venue.

The police action prevented the memorial activities from continuing as scheduled.
Further details about the incident are expected to emerge.
