The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest and detention of one of its officers accused of extorting a motorist in the Idimu area of Lagos.
The incident came to light after a video circulated widely on social media, showing a driver alleging that he was stopped by the officer despite having complete vehicle documentation. According to the motorist, the situation escalated into a dispute over the colour description of his car.
The driver claimed that the officer insisted the vehicle was “grey” instead of “ash,” as stated in the registration papers, and allegedly threatened him with arrest.
“He told me my papers were incorrect because of the colour difference and said I would be taken in,” the motorist alleged in the viral clip. “He then demanded N30,000, which he later reduced to N10,000.”
In response, the police, in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, confirmed that the officer had been identified and taken into custody.
“The officer captured in the viral video has been identified, arrested, detained, and queried,” the statement read. “The Lagos Command will make the outcome of the investigation public as soon as the process is concluded.”
The police added that the officer is currently undergoing internal disciplinary procedures, stressing that appropriate action will be taken based on the findings.
“We remain committed to professionalism and accountability,” the statement added. “No form of misconduct will be tolerated within the Force.”
