The Oyo State Government has announced the commencement of house-to-house enforcement of a mandatory waste bin policy aimed at improving environmental sanitation across the state.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, said the government has given residents, property owners and business operators until September 1, 2026, to comply with the directive.
Aderinto explained that every residential and commercial property must provide waste bins suitable for the size of the building, the number of occupants and the quantity of waste generated.
According to him, the measure is part of the state’s efforts to strengthen waste management and ensure cleaner communities.
“Every household, residential building, business premises, shopping complex and plaza is expected to provide designated waste bins commensurate with the size of the building, the number of occupants and the volume of waste generated,” the commissioner said.
He added that residents and businesses must engage only government-accredited Private Sector Participants (PSPs) for waste collection and evacuation.
“Property owners and occupiers are also required to remain up to date with their monthly waste disposal payments, as enforcement teams will verify evidence of payment during inspections,” Aderinto stated.
The commissioner urged residents to keep their surroundings clean, warning that anyone who engages unapproved waste contractors or disposes of refuse through unauthorised means would be sanctioned in accordance with the law.
“Anyone found engaging unapproved waste contractors or disposing of waste through unauthorised means will face the full weight of the law,” he warned.
He advised residents experiencing challenges with waste collection services or those seeking information on accredited PSP operators to contact the Oyo State Solid Waste Management Authority or the Department of Environmental Health Services in the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.
The commissioner noted that full enforcement of the policy will begin on September 1, 2026, following the one-month compliance period.
