A tragic road accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway claimed one life and left nine others injured on Saturday, the Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed.
The crash occurred at New Garage, inward Lagos, around 6:55 a.m. and involved a white Iveco truck with registration number MEK 34 XC and a white Toyota commercial bus marked ENU 814 XJ.
Confirming the incident, FRSC Public Education Officer in Lagos, Route Commander Oluwadamilola Jayeola, said all passengers on board were affected.
“Tragically, one male passenger lost his life, while nine others — eight men and one woman — sustained varying degrees of injuries. No passenger escaped unhurt,” Jayeola disclosed in a statement.
According to her, the injured were promptly evacuated to the Emergency Centre, Ojota, and Gbagada General Hospital, while the deceased was deposited at Real Divine Hospital Mortuary, Ibafo.
She explained that the vehicles have been taken into custody by the Ojodu Abiodun Police Division as investigations continue.
“Preliminary findings point to speeding and road obstruction as the causes of the crash. Our rescue team cleared the obstruction quickly, restoring normal traffic flow,” she added.
The Lagos Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Kehinde Hamzat, extended condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victims a swift recovery.
Hamzat also warned motorists to exercise caution, particularly in the “ember months” when accident rates usually rise.
“Speeding remains one of the leading causes of avoidable crashes on our highways. Drivers must show patience and remain fully concentrated behind the wheel,” he cautioned.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which spans about 127.6 kilometers, has long been notorious for fatal accidents linked to speeding, poor road conditions, and reckless driving.
