Kingmakers nominate Olakulehin as Olubadan of Ibadanland

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, describing the monarch’s demise as a significant loss to the state and the Ibadan traditional institution.

The governor made this known on Monday when he received a delegation from the late monarch’s family at his office.

The delegation included Chief Bayo Oyero, former President-General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes and Aare Mayegun of Ibadanland; Mr. Osuolale Owolabi Olakulehin, the younger brother of the late monarch; and Aremo Olasumbo Owolabi, the monarch’s son.

While addressing the family, Governor Makinde pledged the state government’s full support throughout the mourning period and assured that the late Olubadan would be honoured with a befitting state burial.

“We always wish our revered elders could stay longer, but God, who created us, has designed our bodies to exist only for a while,” Makinde said.

“I commiserate with the entire family and Ibadanland. The state government will play its full part in honouring Kabiyesi with a dignified burial and continue to stand by his family.”

Reflecting on his own loss, Makinde added, “Coincidentally, today makes it exactly 13 years since I lost my father. So, I understand how difficult this moment is for the family. I pray for strength and comfort for everyone.”

Earlier, Chief Bayo Oyero officially informed the governor of the monarch’s passing, expressing gratitude for the governor’s role in ensuring Oba Olakulehin’s peaceful ascension to the throne despite initial controversies.

“We have come to formally inform you that His Imperial Majesty, Oba Frederick Owolabi Olakulehin, Ige Olakulehin I, joined his ancestors early this morning,” Oyero said. “Despite the circumstances before his coronation, you approved his installation and supported him all the way. We thank you and the government for the historic and memorable coronation ceremony.”

Oba Olakulehin recently marked his 90th birthday on July 5, 2025, and was installed as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland just a year ago.
