Okonkwo targets AFCON glory with Super Eagles

Charlton Athletic goalkeeper, Arthur Okonkwo, has said his major ambition with Nigeria is to win the Africa Cup of Nations, while also helping the Super Eagles secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Okonkwo was recalled to the Nigeria squad for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau after making his senior debut during the 2026 Unity Cup.

The 24-year-old kept clean sheets in Nigeria’s victories over Zimbabwe and Jamaica.

The goalkeeper expressed his delight at receiving another invitation to represent the country, saying the opportunity had been a long time coming.

“I’m super happy. It’s been a moment I’ve been waiting for almost a year, trying to get everything sorted, so I’m just happy to be here and be with my teammates again. And yeah, it’s a proud moment for me and my family.”

Okonkwo is now looking to build on his impressive start to international football and establish himself as a dependable option in the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping department.

With Nigeria beginning their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign, the Charlton shot-stopper has set his sights beyond the immediate fixtures, targeting major success with the national team.

“I want to win the AFCON, and I want to compete in the World Cup.”
