Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has extended his congratulations to Team Delta, crediting the state’s consistent supremacy in Nigerian sports to his administration’s steadfast dedication and long-term investment in the sector.
The governor made this known after the state received the winners’ trophy for emerging champions at the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games Ogun 2024.
Represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr. Etacherure Ejiro Terry, Governor Oborevwori said, “Team Delta’s victory was also a reward for the government’s dedication to the development of the youth through sports,” emphasizing that his administration remains resolute in its efforts to advance sports development across the state.
He applauded the athletes for their hard work and commitment, which ensured that Delta maintained its leading position in Nigerian sports, and pledged continued support for those who excel.
“The State government would not relent in investing in sports in the state,” he assured.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr. Onoriode Oborevwori, credited the state’s success to the governor’s enduring support.
“That was the elixir to the state’s triumph at the games,” he said.
He praised Team Delta for being exemplary ambassadors, noting, “They showed decorum and professionalism even when faced with challenges.” He also reaffirmed the state’s ongoing commitment to the athletes’ welfare.
Team Delta capped another impressive campaign at the festival with 126 gold, 100 silver, and 111 bronze medals—securing a record fifth straight title and their ninth overall since first winning in Bauchi in 2000.
In a dramatic final day, hosts Team Ogun edged Bayelsa to second place with 93 gold, 65 silver, and 50 bronze medals. Bayelsa, initially poised to finish second, dropped to third with 92 gold, 65 silver, and 71 bronze medals.
Team Rivers came fourth with a haul of 76 gold, 58 silver, and 65 bronze medals, followed by Team Edo in fifth with 73 gold, 101 silver, and 119 bronze medals.
Four-time champions Team Lagos placed sixth after collecting 38 gold, 43 silver, and 88 bronze medals, closely trailed by Team Oyo with 38 gold, 37 silver, and 51 bronze.
Team FCT took eighth with 14 gold, 8 silver, and 17 bronze, while Team Osun clinched ninth spot with 13 gold, 3 silver, and 11 bronze medals. Rounding out the top ten was Team Akwa Ibom, which garnered 12 gold, 11 silver, and 20 bronze.
The next edition of the National Sports Festival is scheduled to be hosted by Enugu State in 2025.
