The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has disclosed that 65 per cent of its personnel in the Federal Capital Territory Command have undergone retraining on weapon handling between 2023 and 2025 as part of efforts to strengthen operational efficiency and crime prevention.
The FCT Commandant of the corps, Olusola Odumosu, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Friday.
Odumosu said the command was working towards retraining an additional 20 per cent of its officers and men before the end of 2026, which would bring the total number of retrained personnel to 85 per cent.
According to him, officers selected for the exercise were drawn from the command’s 25 divisions and area commands, while the training was conducted by the Arms Squad unit in partnership with the Nigerian Army.
“We have retrained personnel across the command on proper weapon handling and operational procedures to enhance professionalism and effective response to security challenges,” he said.
The commandant also revealed that more than 2,500 officers and men had participated in refresher courses covering different aspects of security operations and administration.
“We have trained personnel from different departments and units at the command headquarters, divisions and area commands on operational skills, intelligence gathering, surveillance, administration, strategy, logistics and tactical manoeuvring,” Odumosu stated.
He further disclosed that the command had completed a new training facility equipped with classrooms and tactical obstacle courses to improve the physical fitness and preparedness of personnel.
“This will further enhance physical fitness, readiness and operational capability, as well as the ability to respond effectively to criminal activities,” he added.
Odumosu stressed the importance of adopting modern security innovations and aligning with global best practices in tackling crime within the FCT.
“We recently received drones from the corps’ national headquarters to enhance patrol of critical national assets within the FCT. This requires proper training for operators, making training a continuous process,” he said.
The commandant also appealed for partnerships and support from stakeholders willing to collaborate with the corps in improving security operations across the territory.
