Nigeria’s Folashade Oluwafemiayo once again etched her name in the history books after shattering her own world record to win gold in the women’s 86kg category at the World Powerlifting Championships in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday.
The powerlifting sensation lifted an incredible 168kg to surpass her previous record of 167kg, cementing her dominance in the sport and securing her fourth world title for Nigeria.
Oluwafemiayo’s triumph adds to her impressive career haul, which includes two Paralympic gold medals and several global accolades.
Her journey to greatness began at the London 2012 Paralympics, where she claimed a silver medal in the women’s 75kg class while breaking a world record in the process.
She went on to clinch gold at the 2017 World Para Powerlifting Championships in Mexico before facing a one-year suspension for a doping violation.
Undeterred, the resilient athlete made a strong comeback, winning gold at the 2021 edition in Tbilisi, Georgia, where she set another world record of 152.5kg.
Oluwafemiayo’s winning streak continued at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where she claimed gold in the heavyweight category, further establishing her as one of Nigeria’s most decorated and consistent para-athletes.
