Nigeria’s Ezechukwu disqualified from World Athletics U-20 200m final

Nigerian sprinter, Miracle Ezechukwu’s campaign at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, ended abruptly after she was disqualified from the women’s 200m final for a lane infringement.

Ezechukwu had looked set to advance to the final after producing one of the standout performances in the semi-finals, clocking a personal best of 22.61 seconds to finish second.

However, officials later ruled that she had stepped outside her designated lane, resulting in her disqualification from the final.

Team Nigeria lodged a protest in a bid to overturn the decision and have the teenager reinstated, but the appeal was rejected.

The ruling left Ezechukwu devastated, with the young sprinter reportedly spending much of the day in tears.

The decision has sparked disappointment among Nigerian athletics stakeholders, who believe the circumstances surrounding the ruling deserve closer scrutiny and have raised concerns about the standard of officiating and technical support available to Nigerian athletes at major championships.

The incident is the latest in a series of controversies involving Nigerian athletes in recent months.

Rosemary Chukwuma was at the centre of a disputed decision at the CAA Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, after she was relegated from gold to silver in the women’s 100m final.

Nigeria’s relay team also suffered disappointment after Canada’s disqualification was overturned, leading to the Canadian team being reinstated after initially finishing second.

For many stakeholders, Ezechukwu’s disqualification has renewed calls for stronger technical representation and better preparation for Nigerian athletes competing at major international championships.
