Nigeria reaffirms commitment to religious freedom after US statement

The Federal Government has restated its commitment to protecting religious freedom and safeguarding citizens’ rights, following a recent statement issued by the United States on the state of religious freedom in Nigeria.

In a statement released on Saturday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the government emphasized that it remains focused on combating violent extremism and defending the rights of all Nigerians, regardless of their faith, ethnicity, or background.

“We remain committed in our resolve to tackle the violent extremism that is fueled by special interests who have helped drive such decay and division in countries across the intersecting West African and Sahel regions,” the statement said.

The government expressed sympathy to families affected by extremist violence and praised the efforts of security agencies working to restore peace in troubled regions.

“We mourn all the victims of violent extremism and salute our armed forces as they continue to fight against vicious but cowardly foes. The Federal Government of Nigeria will continue to defend all citizens, irrespective of race, creed, or religion,” Ebienfa noted.

Reaffirming the country’s diversity as a national asset, the ministry stated that Nigeria shares similar values with the United States regarding religious freedom and social inclusion.

“Like America, Nigeria has no option but to celebrate the diversity that is our greatest strength. Nigeria is a God-fearing country where we respect faith, tolerance, diversity and inclusion,” the statement added.

The Federal Government also described the longstanding relationship between both countries as crucial to regional stability and global democratic goals.
