President Bola Tinubu has pledged that his administration will focus on consolidating Nigeria’s recent economic gains in 2026, with an emphasis on building a more resilient, inclusive and growth-driven economy that delivers measurable benefits to citizens.
In his New Year address to the nation, the President said Nigeria closed 2025 on a stronger economic footing, pointing to sustained quarterly growth, improved trade balances and increased stability in the foreign exchange market.
He noted that inflation, which had been a major concern for households, declined steadily throughout the year to below 15 per cent.
“Despite the challenges we faced, our economy showed remarkable resilience in 2025,” Tinubu said. “We recorded robust growth across key sectors, strengthened our external position and achieved greater stability in the exchange rate, all of which signal a recovery that must now be deepened.”
The President also highlighted the performance of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, which he said outperformed many global peers with a 48.12 per cent gain, reflecting renewed investor confidence.
According to him, the rally in the capital market underscores growing faith in ongoing reforms and the long-term prospects of the Nigerian economy.
Looking ahead, Tinubu said his government will intensify efforts to further tame inflation, boost productivity and expand opportunities for businesses and workers alike.
He stressed that economic growth must translate into lower living costs, better jobs and improved welfare for ordinary Nigerians.
“Our priority in 2026 is simple,” the President said. “We will consolidate these gains, protect the most vulnerable, and ensure that growth is inclusive and sustainable. The goal is an economy that works for every Nigerian, not just in the numbers, but in everyday life.”
