New James Bond search officially begins as auditions kick off

The search for the next James Bond has formally started, marking a major step toward the next chapter of the iconic spy franchise after years of speculation over who will replace Daniel Craig as 007.

“The search for the next James Bond is under way,” Amazon MGM Studios said in a statement.

According to reports from Hollywood outlet Variety, auditions have already been taking place in recent weeks, with the studio’s statement signalling that the long-running casting process is now fully in motion.

“While we don’t plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we’re excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right,” Amazon added.

It has been five years since the release of No Time To Die, which served as Craig’s final outing as the legendary British spy. It has also been around 15 months since Amazon MGM Studios took creative control of the Bond franchise.

The upcoming film already has key creatives attached, with Dune filmmaker Denis Villeneuve set to direct, while Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is writing the script.

Variety also reported that top casting director Nina Gold, known for her work across major franchises including Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Paddington, and Mamma Mia!, is leading the search for the next Bond actor.

Who might become the next James Bond?
Several names are already being widely discussed as potential successors.

Callum Turner is currently the bookmakers’ favourite. The 36-year-old has appeared in the Fantastic Beasts films, earned a BAFTA TV nomination for The Capture, and featured in Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air. He is also known for his relationship with Dua Lipa.

Jacob Elordi, 28, has also emerged as a strong contender after rising to fame in Euphoria and Saltburn, and receiving an Oscar nomination this year for his role in Frankenstein.

Reports suggest he is now “in pole position” with some industry insiders.

Harris Dickinson, 29, is another name in the mix. He is set to play John Lennon in an upcoming Beatles biopic series and has appeared in Maleficent, The King’s Man, Where the Crawdads Sing, and Babygirl.

Veteran favourite Henry Cavill, known for Superman, The Witcher, and Mission: Impossible – Fallout, remains popular with fans, though at 43, questions have been raised about whether he would be cast for a long-term run.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson, 35, continues to be heavily linked to the role, with credits including Kick-Ass, Kraven the Hunter, and 28 Years Later.

Theo James, 41, is also considered a strong fit, having starred in Divergent, The White Lotus, The Gentlemen, and other major productions.

However, producers are reportedly still open to other established or unexpected choices as they continue the casting process.

The actor selected will become only the seventh official James Bond in the franchise’s 64-year history.

‘Care and deep respect’
Speaking at CinemaCon, Courtenay Valenti, head of film at Amazon MGM Studios, addressed the ongoing anticipation around the casting decision.

“I know you’re all wondering when we’re going to announce who’s playing James Bond.

“Please know that we’re taking the time to do this with care and deep respect. It is the dream of a lifetime for all of us to bring audiences this next chapter, and it’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly.

“What I can tell you is this: When you pair one of the most beloved franchises in history with a world-class film-making team… you’re setting the stage for something that’s truly worthy of the Bond legacy.

“That film is coming, and when the time is right, we’ll have much more to share.”

Meanwhile, Steven Knight has said his work on the script is “going fantastically”, adding: “I am 1,000% confident that when this gets out there people are going to really love it.”

No details about the full cast, storyline, or release date for the 26th official Bond film have yet been revealed.

The project will be produced by Amy Pascal and David Heyman, both of whom bring extensive experience from major global franchises.
