A man has been confirmed dead following the collapse of a three-storey building under construction on Borno Street, Alagomeji, in the Yaba area of Lagos State.

The structure caved in around 7:46 p.m. on Friday, sparking a multi-agency search and rescue operation.

The National Emergency Management Agency, in an update on Saturday, disclosed that the deceased victim was recovered from the rubble during ongoing operations.

“One male body has just been recovered from the debris. Search and rescue efforts are still ongoing,” NEMA said in its official statement.

Earlier, four people had been pulled out alive from the wreckage and were confirmed to be in stable condition. However, rescue officials hinted that more victims might still be trapped.

“There is speculation that two additional persons could be under the rubble,” NEMA noted, adding that the agency was working alongside the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Fire Services, the Police, FRSC, and the NSCDC.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Fire Service confirmed that at least eight construction workers were rescued overnight.

This latest collapse has reignited concerns about building safety standards in Lagos, where several similar incidents have occurred in recent years despite repeated government warnings.

Residents who gathered at the scene expressed frustration over what they described as negligence and poor enforcement of construction regulations.

A bystander, simply identified as Segun, said: “Every time a building comes down like this, lives are lost. The government must be stricter with builders because this is becoming too common.”
