Nations League: Switzerland edge Slovenia 2-1 to maintain perfect start

Switzerland maintained their perfect start to the campaign with a 2-1 victory over Slovenia in Lucerne on Saturday.

The Swiss have now recorded three wins from three matches after previously defeating North Macedonia and Scotland away from home.

Slovenia took an early lead after just two minutes when Zan Vipotnik finished a quick counterattack following a corner kick.

Switzerland responded eight minutes later when Erik Janza inadvertently turned Remo Freuler’s effort into his own net, leaving goalkeeper Jan Oblak unable to keep it out.

Switzerland continued to control proceedings and completed the comeback in the 38th minute.

Zeki Amdouni attracted several defenders inside the penalty area before the loose ball fell to Dan Ndoye, who fired home from close range to make it 2-1.

The hosts dominated much of the second half as they searched for a third goal, but Oblak denied Freuler and Johan Manzambi.

Amdouni, who had scored in Switzerland’s opening two matches, also failed to add to his tally despite making a strong contribution through his work rate.

Slovenia threatened late on when substitute Zan Celar found himself with a good opportunity in the 90th minute, but his effort went wide as Switzerland held on for another victory.

The result leaves Switzerland top of the group with nine points from three matches, five points ahead of Slovenia and Scotland, while North Macedonia remain bottom without a point.

Switzerland will host North Macedonia in Lucerne on Tuesday, having already beaten them 3-0 away from home.
