Nations League: Northern Ireland, Hungary play goalless draw

Northern Ireland were held to a goalless draw by Hungary at Windsor Park on Monday, maintaining their unbeaten start to the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League.

Michael O’Neill’s side came into the Group B2 encounter full of confidence after their late victory over Georgia in their opening match.

They started brightly, with Hungary’s defence making important blocks to deny Ethan Galbraith and Isaac Price early on.

Patrick Kelly then came close to breaking the deadlock when his attempted chip over goalkeeper Balazs Toth was clawed away.

Kelly went even closer shortly afterwards, striking the crossbar from close range as Northern Ireland continued to threaten.

Hungary survived the pressure and reached half-time level, although they were forced to replace Bendeguz Bolla after he suffered an injury shortly after the half-hour mark.

The second half produced fewer clear opportunities, with both teams appearing cautious about conceding the opening goal.

Hungary’s Donat Barany headed over from a promising position with 20 minutes remaining.

Northern Ireland pushed for a late winner, but Toth produced another important save at his near post to deny Price.

Neither side could find a breakthrough before the final whistle.

The result leaves Northern Ireland with four points from their opening two Group B2 matches, while they are yet to concede a goal.

They will face Ukraine in Slovakia on Friday, while Hungary will host Georgia on the same day.
