Nations League: Netherlands hold Greece to 2-2 draw

Netherlands staged a late comeback to secure a 2-2 draw against Greece in their UEFA Nations League Group A2 encounter on Thursday.

Greece took control of the game in the first half, with Fotis Ioannidis opening the scoring in the 23rd minute before Giorgos Masouras doubled the advantage shortly before the break.

The hosts threatened to extend their lead after the interval, but the Netherlands gradually took control of proceedings as they dominated possession and increased the pressure on the Greek defence.

The visitors pulled one back in the 59th minute when Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk rose above the Greek defence to head home from Joey Veerman’s corner.

The Netherlands appeared to have levelled shortly afterwards, but Denzel Dumfries’ close-range effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

However, the Dutch continued to push forward and were rewarded in the 89th minute when Tijjani Reijnders volleyed home after Noa Lang’s cross was flicked on by substitute Joshua Zirkzee.

The draw left Greece top of Group A2 with seven points, while the Netherlands remained second on five points, ahead of Germany on four.

The Netherlands will host Serbia on Sunday as they look to secure their first victory of the international break.
