‘Married at First Sight’ star Mel Schilling passes away at 54

Married at First Sight dating coach Mel Schilling has died in the United Kingdom at the age of 54 after battling cancer, her husband has confirmed on Instagram.

Schilling, who had been part of the reality TV franchise since 2016, was first diagnosed in December 2023. Earlier this month, she revealed that the illness had progressed to her brain.

Her husband, Gareth, said she “passed away peacefully today, surrounded by love”.

“To most of you, she was Mel Schilling – matriarch of MAFS and queen of reality TV. To Maddie and me, she was our wee Melsie: an incredible mum, role model, and soulmate,” he wrote.

He added that she used her final moments to pass on a message for him and their daughter.

He said she used “all of her remaining strength” in her final moments to whisper a message for daughter Maddie and him “that will sustain me for the rest of my life”.

“Even then, her only thought was for Maddie and me,” he said.

Reflecting on her life and struggle, he wrote, “This is a woman who became a new mum and a TV star at 42 – and nailed both.

“This is a woman who, through two years of chemotherapy, when she could barely lift her head from the pillow, never complained and never stopped showing courage, grace, compassion and empathy, and never missed a day of filming.”

He continued, “Life can be beautiful, and life can be incredibly cruel. But ultimately, life is fleeting, fragile, and tomorrow is promised to no one. If you can do anything to honour Mel, please live life to the full, love your people well, and try not to sweat the small stuff.

“I had 15 wonderful years with my soulmate, and it was the privilege of my life to be by her side. For that, I will be forever thankful.

“Goodbye, my love. My one. Until we meet again.”

Schilling originally joined Married at First Sight in Australia before becoming a familiar face on the UK version, which airs on E4. She recently stepped down from the Australian edition after 12 seasons.

Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues and public figures.

Relationship expert Charlene Douglas said: “I’m both devastated and heartbroken to hear of the passing of my MAFS queen and friend Mel.

“I had the pleasure of spending time with Mel in her last days and will forever treasure the laughter, the memories and love we had for each other.

“Mel’s love for life, jokes and of course dancing will forever stay in my heart. What I wouldn’t give to be dancing to Beyoncé with you right now.

“Sleep in perfect peace Mel. Love you.”
Author Elizabeth Day, who co-hosted the How To Date podcast with Schilling, wrote, “What a woman. What a radiant, shining light.

“How grateful I am to have known her. How grateful I am to you, Gaz, and to Maddie for being the loves of her life. I love you all so much.

“Thank you for the gift of your friendship. And thank you most of all to Mel. Our girl.”

Other tributes came from across the entertainment industry, including Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu, Alison Hammond, and several former Married at First Sight participants, who described her as warm, inspiring, and deeply supportive.

Channel 4 also paid tribute, saying the programme “reflected so much about her – her fierce advocacy for other women, her passion for healthy relationships and her mission to unite people in love”.

A statement added, “Just as importantly, we’d like to pay tribute to Mel as a person. For many who work for Channel 4, Mel was not just a colleague but a friend, someone who radiated joy, warmth and optimism, who energized every room she walked into, with humour and positivity.

“Everyone who knew her will miss all this about her and much more. We share in the sorrow that we’re sure many viewers will now feel at this terrible loss.”

CPL Productions, which produces Married at First Sight UK, said she “will be deeply missed by everyone whose lives she touched”.

“Mel went far beyond being just a fantastic on-screen presenter; she was a friend to CPL, and to many of us who worked with her,” the company said.

Schilling had previously spoken openly about her illness after being diagnosed with colon cancer. After her diagnosis, she underwent extensive chemotherapy while continuing to film the show.

In March this year, she revealed the cancer had spread and that treatment options had been exhausted.

“My light is starting to fade – and quickly,” she wrote at the time.

Her openness about her condition has been widely praised for raising awareness of bowel cancer symptoms and encouraging early medical checks.
