Enzo Maresca blasted his underperforming Chelsea squad after their Premier League title ambitions took a major hit in a shocking 3-1 loss to struggling Leeds United on Wednesday night.
Chelsea delivered a dismal first-half display at Elland Road, allowing Jaka Bijol and Ao Tanaka to put Leeds firmly in control before Pedro Neto briefly sparked hope after the break.
However, a calamitous late strike from Dominic Calvert-Lewin sealed the Blues’ fate.
Falling to a team sitting fourth from bottom, a side that had lost four successive league games, was a crushing blow to Chelsea’s pursuit of leaders Arsenal.
The defeat, their first in eight matches across all competitions, leaves Maresca’s men nine points behind the Gunners in fourth place.
“There was nobody at their best level,” Maresca said. “They were better than us in all aspects, they deserved to win.
“A very poor night. We performed so well against Arsenal and Barcelona, but it doesn’t mean we are going to always perform the same way because of the situation you have to manage, the players you have to rotate.
“The only thing we can do is to try and understand what we did and then reset.”
Chelsea were missing Moises Caicedo after his red card in Sunday’s heated 1-1 draw with Arsenal.
Despite Trevoh Chalobah giving the Blues the lead in that encounter, Mikel Merino’s late leveller forced them to settle for a point.
Maresca opted to rest Neto, Reece James and Wesley Fofana to inject fresh legs, but the effects of playing with 10 men for most of the Arsenal match were clear. Leeds capitalised on a Chelsea side struggling both mentally and physically.
“I hope we just had a bad night because it’s a game where you struggle to take anything from. They were much better in the duels,” Maresca said.
“It’s the Premier League, you need to perform every game, no matter if you are at home or away.
“We missed Moises tonight and will miss him in the next games. He is an important player for any team in the world.”
Leeds took the lead inside six minutes as Anton Stach’s corner was met by Bijol, who rose above Liam Delap to head beyond Robert Sanchez.
Chelsea, who had won only 29 percent of league matches without Caicedo starting, continued to suffer without their midfield dynamo.
Pascal Struijk came close from another set-piece, highlighting Chelsea’s defensive sloppiness.
The hosts doubled their lead in the 43rd minute with a stunning effort. Tanaka collected the ball on the edge of the box and rifled a powerful strike into the net, further damaging Chelsea’s title credentials.
History offered little comfort: Chelsea have never won a Premier League away match after trailing by two or more at half-time.
Neto’s introduction brought some life just five minutes into the second half. Jamie Gittens delivered a precise cross, and Neto controlled before smashing in his fifth league goal of the campaign.
Cole Palmer returned from a lengthy injury absence, which included breaking his toe after hitting it against a door and nearly made a dream comeback.
A sharp run and delivery from Alejandro Garnacho found Palmer, whose driven effort flew inches wide.
But Chelsea’s night unravelled again with a disastrous defensive mistake in the 72nd minute. Malo Gusto’s risky pass put Tosin Adarabioyo in trouble, and his attempted back-pass was pounced on by Noah Okafor.
Although Sanchez initially saved, Calvert-Lewin tapped into an unguarded net while Maresca stared on in disbelief.
