The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested a man, Zayyanu Halilu, for allegedly sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl in Abuja.
The incident reportedly occurred on October 2 at the Airport Bridge Taxi Park, where police operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit were conducting a routine patrol.
In a statement issued by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the command said officers became suspicious after noticing a navy-blue Volkswagen with its windows wound up and appearing to shake.
The officers reportedly approached the vehicle and discovered Halilu allegedly abusing the minor.
Adeh said the suspect was arrested immediately while the girl was rescued.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had, on several occasions, lured and sexually abused the underaged victim in the said vehicle parked at the same location,” the statement said.
The police added that the suspect allegedly threatened the girl to prevent her from disclosing the abuse.
According to the command, a medical examination subsequently revealed that the victim was about three months pregnant.
“The victim is currently receiving medical care and assessment, while the suspect remains in police custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations,” the police said.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, urged parents and guardians to pay close attention to the safety and whereabouts of children under their care.
The command also advised residents to report suspicious activities or persons to the nearest police station or through its emergency lines.
