A 27-year-old man, identified as Chidi Ebere, has been arrested by operatives of the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly killing a commercial motorcyclist in the Igbesa area of the state.
The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday morning when the suspect boarded the motorcycle operated by 36-year-old Sunday Ogbu under the guise of being a passenger.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the situation escalated into violence when the suspect allegedly attempted to dispossess the rider of his motorcycle.
“The suspect reportedly boarded the motorcycle as a passenger but attacked the rider in an attempt to steal the bike, leading to a struggle between them,” Babaseyi said.
She explained that a witness who observed the altercation raised an alarm, which drew the attention of security operatives to the scene.
“The victim was quickly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment but was later confirmed dead by the attending doctor,” she added.
The police spokesperson disclosed that the suspect was arrested at the scene, while the motorcycle and a knife believed to have been used in the attack were recovered as exhibits.
“The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Eleweran for further investigation and prosecution,” Babaseyi stated.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, condemned the act and assured residents that justice would be pursued.
He also urged members of the public to remain alert and promptly report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
