The All Progressives Congress has cautioned Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to avoid actions that could lead to chaos and lawlessness regarding the contentious local government elections.
Governor Yusuf recently declared that the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission would proceed with the polls scheduled for October 26, despite a Federal High Court ruling restraining the commission.
The APC chairman in Kano, Abdullahi Abbas, on Friday, criticized the governor’s statement, urging him to respect the laws and refrain from inciting people to disregard the court’s directive, according to Leadership.
A Federal High Court had ruled that KANSIEC’s chairman, secretary, and commissioners were unfit for their positions due to their partisan affiliations with the ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party and lack of requisite civil service grade levels.
The court also restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission from issuing a voter’s register to KANSIEC and ordered security agencies, including the police, DSS, and Civil Defence, not to participate in the proposed elections.
The APC emphasized that good leadership involves respecting the by law, not promoting lawlessness. The party’s warning comes amid escalating tensions over the local government elections in Kano State.
“The Governor should simply respect the laws. As law-abiding citizens interested in the growth of our dear state of Kano, the Governor should desist from any act that could throw the state into chaos. Inciting people to take the laws into their hand is not the hallmark of good leadership,” the party noted.
